How Do Sioux Falls Chiropractic Adjustments Work?
We love chiropractic care and we know a lot of you do too. But what about those who have never been to a chiropractor before and are skeptical about what it is, how it works, and whether or not it is safe and effective? In this blog we explain exactly how chiropractic adjustments work so that you can explain it to your skeptical friends, or so you can feel confident scheduling your first appointment.
What is Chiropractic Care?
The word chiropractic actually comes from Greek and means "done by hand." Chiropractic care involves the use of gentle force (the doctor's hands or a small instrument) to apply pressure to the body in order to adjust joint structures to improve mobility and overall health.
How Do Chiropractic Adjustments Work?
Doctors of chiropractic can adjust all joints in the body. Nerves run through many joint pathways. Adjusting your joints back into proper alignment enables your nerves to communicate more effectively and reduces pain. Nerves are the information highway of the body. All of your body functions rely on your nerve pathways. Seeing, smelling, walking, going to the bathroom; without a working nervous system these functions are greatly impaired.
Chiropractic care is designed to find and adjust subluxations, or joints that are not in alignment. Correcting subluxations activates the body's ability to self-heal and restore function. We are out of the habit of thinking of our bodies as self-healing, but they really are! Think about when you cut yourself shaving. Do you have to think about healing your cut or does your body do it?
Our bodies are designed to self-heal and self-regulate, chiropractic care and chiropractic adjustments help to activate your body's desire to heal by restoring proper alignment.
Are Chiropractic Adjustments Safe?
Chiropractic adjustments are incredibly safe when performed by a trained chiropractic doctor and are even recommended by many in traditional medicine. In fact, chiropractic care carries much less risk than many over the counter pain medications. Put into perspective, if you drive more than a mile to get to your chiropractic appointment, you are at greater risk of serious injury from a car accident than from your chiropractic visit.
Are Chiropractic Adjustments Painful?
No. Not usually. If you are extremely out of alignment there may be times when you may experience a brief sensation of discomfort, however it is usually described by our patients as, "hurts so good". We always encourage our patients to maintain communication with their chiropractor throughout the adjustment and inform them if they feel uncomfortable in any way. Most of the time the chiropractor can change their technique slightly to help restore alignment and avoid pain.
Once your appointment is done your doctor will give you specific suggestions to relieve any discomfort you might feel as your body adjusts to the new "normal." This discomfort is minimal and is almost always much less than the pain that brought you in in the first place!
Are Chiropractic Adjustments Effective?
Absolutely.
Because chiropractic adjustments restore the natural communication system in the body, they are a great compliment to your overall health and wellness plan. Chiropractic care can help you maintain and improve function and compliment and enhance traditional medical care.
