4 Fast Facts About the History of American Chiropractic Care
For the FOURTH of July, we thought it would be fun to share FOUR fast facts about the history of American chiropractic care! We hope you enjoy a safe and happy holiday and enjoy sharing these facts with your family and friends!
1. American Chiropractic Care Started in Iowa
The very first known "chiropractic" adjustment was performed in Davenport, Iowa in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer (the man in the picture above), a merchant who was known for his love for natural healing. Mr. Palmer was working in his office while his janitor Harvey Lillard cleaned. At one point Lillard bent over and Palmer noticed that his vertebrae appeared to be out of place. Palmer asked Lillard if he had hurt himself and Lillard confirmed he had felt a pop 17 years earlier and subsequently lost part of his hearing.
When he heard that, Palmer immediately performed an adjustment on Lillard which resulted in the restoration of some of Lillard's hearing! This was a transformational experience that led to Palmer opening a school to teach his methods.
2. The Name "Chiropractic" was Suggested by a Pastor
Rev. Weed, a friend of Mr. Palmer, was the one to suggest the name chiropractic. As a trained pastor, Weed was familiar with Greek and suggested Palmer name his method chiropractic. The term comes from the Greek words cheiros and praktikos meaning "done by hand."
3. Chiropractors Were First Licensed in 1913
Before 1913, many doctors and naturopaths were getting chiropractic education and training, but there were never any state or national licensing processes. The first state law licensing chiropractors was passed in Kansas in 1913. By 1931, 39 states had given chiropractors legal recognition. Now, of course, chiropractic care is recognized in all 50 states and around the word!
4. Chiropractic is the Fastest-Growing Primary Health Care Profession
Right now there are around 95,000 actively practicing chiropractic doctors in the world. With over 10,000 students enrolled at chiropractic schools in the United States alone, that number is growing rapidly. In fact, according to the International Chiropractic Association, chiropractic care is the second largest health care profession! We expect that number to continue to grow due to chiropractic's effectiveness at treating chronic pain.
