6 Common Myths About Pediatric Chiropractic - Sioux Falls Chiropractic

When it comes to pediatric chiropractic, Sioux Falls Chiropractic ends up doing a lot of myth-busting. Parents always want to be sure that they are providing the very best for their child, and we couldn't agree more. The benefits of pediatric chiropractic are wonderful and we want to make sure everyone knows it! Here are 6 common myths about pediatric chiropractic, along with the real truth.

Myth: Kids Don’t Need It

If you think about it, birth is a traumatic process. Babies are quite contorted in the womb and during the birthing process. So it is no wonder that they often are out of alignment. These problems with alignment can lead to colic, fussiness, gas, digestive issues, irritability and frequent ear infections, to name a few. As your baby grows, they learn to walk which involves frequent falls and tumbles. Young children also play hard and can sometimes experience minor injuries from play or sports. Chiropractic care can help your child maintain good alignment and help their body and spine learn good patterns. Your may also see improvement in childhood conditions such as ADHD, headaches, constipation, asthma and allergies and immune function.

Myth: It is Dangerous

Pediatric chiropractic care is completely safe for babies and children. We have several pediatricians in town who actually recommend pediatric chiropractic care to their patients and bring their own children to chiropractors. If you are concerned about the safety of using a pediatric chiropractor, talk with your pediatrician.

Myth: It Hurts or Scares Them

Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, if you are like most parents, you will be shocked to see how quickly and peacefully your baby or child can be adjusted. One mother came in and watched us adjust her newborn and commented, "Is that all? I thought it would involve tears and weird positions!" The younger the child, the easier they are to adjust because their joints are still loose.

Myth: They Will Need to be Adjusted Frequently

We have some parents who hesitate to bring in their children because they don't think they can afford frequent visits. But the beauty of helping children is that they do not usually require frequent adjustments unless we are trying to fix a stubborn issue. Most children can come see us on a light regular maintenance schedule.

Myth: We Make Them Take X-rays

We do not perform x-rays on children except for in very rare circumstances. For one, kids rarely have major issues and they are usually easy to diagnose through touch rather than x-ray. If we feel that your child would benefit from an x-ray at some point, we will discuss the pros and cons with you and let you make a decision as the child's parent.

Myth: You Will Need to Find a Different Chiropractor

Some of our patients ask us if it is okay to bring their kids in to see us since we "aren't pediatric chiropractors." Some chiropractors do have special certification in working with children, but while our chiropractors do not, all of our doctors have been trained to work with children from birth on. We love treating our young patients and watching them grow up!
